John Mack
Buffalo, NY based fiber artist whose work explores themes of queer identity, resilience, and collective memory through textile processes that are both personal and political. For over a decade, he has honed his skills in textile and material studies, blending traditional craft techniques with unconventional materials to create pieces that invite reflection, connection, and dialogue.
Drawing inspiration from street and pop art, archival materials, and community storytelling, John channels personal struggles, triumphs, and broader societal questions into his work. His practice centers care, history, and transformation, often incorporating handwork, slow-making, silk-screening, and machine embroidery as acts of resistance and healing.
John’s work has been showcased internationally in Slovakia and Prague, as well as locally at The Burchfield Penney Art Center, Indigo Art Gallery, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, and Dr. Margaret E. Bacon Gallery. Most recently, he served as an Artist in Residence at SUNY Buffalo State College, where he developed dynamic posterized portraits that merge contemporary fiber art with experimental processes. He is currently an MFA candidate in Visual Studies at the University at Buffalo, class of 2027.
